FILLING LEADERSHIP VOIDS

An area of focus for Pachydermos is helping organizations understand that leadership is about change and management is about complexity. Meaning, as an organization grows or expands into different business or geographical areas, the resulting complexity requires management. But that growth or expansion requires leadership to instantiate and then drive the requisite change.

Frequently, we see people with very high levels of management capacity - the ability to handle complexity, thrust into positions that require leadership capacity - the ability to drive change. This inherent conflict creates voids at critical positions in organizations.

The resulting downside is that desired change gets underserved due to the mismatch in capacity and capability. Further, management is almost always an after-the-fact set of actions. For example, managers review what has occurred in order to determine how to streamline or gain efficiency. This absence of focus on the desired end state creates stagnation in activity and confusion for team members accountable for change-related tasks.

A common analogue when making this comparison is the military in times of peace versus conflict. A peacetime military can function incredibly well with ‘managers’ in key positions. But to address conflict effectively, leadership capacity must be applied. It’s impossible to manage people into battle - they must be led.

Are your change efforts successful? Are you building your leadership team to be the next leaders to drive change while they execute upon and manage through your vision? What if your organization had a way to evaluate players in critical positions and then openly adjust roles to align with capacity and capabilities? How much value could be created for your organization and your customers if you eliminated one or more leadership voids? Does it feel like you are alone in this endeavor?
