Joyful Search for Conflict
As a leader, are you seeking out barriers to remove for your team?
Leaders must constantly seek to remove the barriers that are in front of the team. There is simply no other way to facilitate the success of an organization, irrespective of how large or small. That work is inherently linked to conflict - meaning, to drive progress, leaders must seek to identify conflicts, then skillfully remove them such that the team can progress.
If you are conflict averse, you’re likely not as effective as a leader as you think you are. Said differently, if you cannot find joy in pushing analysis and conversations to get to the underlying problem, you are probably doing less than half your job as a leader.
"... there can be no resolution in the absence of conflict."
Effective leaders systematically pressure teams, in positive ways, such that they learn how to embrace and intentionally remove points of conflict. Because there can be no resolution in the absence of conflict. Think about that for a minute…
How productive could your organization be if everyone was collectively searching for conflicts to resolve? How much would the leadership posture of every single individual change for the better if they understood that you can only improve through the pain of conflict? How much better would your organizational culture be if you intentionally hired people that are comfortable with conflict and driving the associated resolution.
Challenge: Ask your team about conflicts they think need to be resolved. Then lead by example as you joyfully dig into the details to resolve. Finally, reward and incentivize those that have fun with such things.
