Revenue-generation strategies may take mission-centric organizations out of their comfort zones.

OK, you’re a mission-driven organization. And nothing is more important or ingrained in the ethos of the team than contributing to the successful attainment of mission goals. Could that also pair with intentional revenue creation strategies in symbiotic ways?

We find that many mission-driven organizations simply don’t perceive themselves as revenue generators and we think that to be a missed opportunity. All missions require funding to execute and all operational models could be improved in the presence of higher levels of sustained cash flow.

If you had more to invest in your team, how much value could you add to mission execution? If you had more to invest in your systems, how much could you improve the efficiency of the day-to-day? If you had more to invest in your programs, outside of grants, could you be more creative?

As a challenge to mission-focused executives, we suggest a simple mindset shift toward more aggressive revenue-growth strategies - as a key variable in driving mission execution.

If you’re a mission-based executive, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is the current composition of the funding for the organization?
  2. Of the existing funding sources, which ones add the most value and why?
  3. Within the high-value sources, how many could be expanded?
  4. Can we create new funding mechanisms related to the high-value sources?

Once you’ve determined what sources you have and where you think you might be able to expand - share these insights with the team. As a mission-driven organization, your team will benefit from awareness and your thought leadership and they will WANT to help generate further revenue in order to meet the mission. We encourage you to not shy away from revenue strategies - don’t be afraid to go on the offensive!
